A 98-year-old man died Tuesday after having a “medical episode” while driving on 53rd Avenue West on Snead Island, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

Troopers say the man was driving an SUV north on 53rd Avenue West north of 13th Street West — an intersection along the Manatee River on Snead Island in Palmetto — Tuesday at around 1:20 p.m. when he suffered an undisclosed medical event, causing him to enter an unpaved shoulder and collide with a wooden post.

The man, who lived in Ellenton, was taken to Manatee Memorial Hospital where he later died, according to a release.

The crash remains under investigation.
