Move over, Grandma! Bradenton students at Visible Men Academy prepare Thanksgiving pies
Students at Visible Men Academy are ready to pitch in on the holiday baking this year.
Around 70 boys suited up in white plastic gloves and aprons to move through an assembly line of pie shells, cinnamon, sugar and apples to create fresh pies for their families’ Thanksgiving celebrations.
“This is one of their Super Bowls. They get so excited about this,” said Janjay Gehndyu, the school’s principal.
Volunteers and board members guided the boys through the steps, allowing them to personalize their pies with different cutouts on the top crust for a special treat to bring home.
Detwiler’s Farm Market supplied fresh apples that filled bowls on the tables, ready for the students to toss into sweetness and spices.
The finished masterpieces were placed into plastic containers and labeled with each child’s name.
Visible Men Academy is a Title I charter school in Bradenton for K-5 boys from low-income families.
“If we can provide them with experiences that are positive,” said Gehndyu, “it helps with their development.”
