A 50-year-old Sarasota man died following a collision with a deer on Interstate 75 in Manatee County, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release Wednesday morning.

The crash happened just south of Buckeye Road after 9 p.m. Tuesday, FHP said.

Troopers say the Sarasota man was riding a motorcycle south on I-75 when he collided with a deer. He was knocked off of the bike and landed on the left paved shoulder of the highway, FHP said. The deer was thrown onto the right shoulder and died.

The motorcycle was left lying in the southbound traffic lanes, where it was then hit by an oncoming vehicle, FHP said.

A marked FHP vehicle responding to the crash drove onto the left paved shoulder of the interstate and hit the fallen motorcyclist, FHP said.

The motorcyclist died on the highway.

The crash remained under investigation on Wednesday, FHP said. No other details were released.
