The Peculiar Pub brings something new to Bradenton area with craft beers, savory bites

A familiar name and face have returned to Lakewood Ranch Main Street with a new business.

John Breiner, 57, recently opened The Peculiar Pub at 8141 Lakewood Main St.

“At Peculiar Pub, we believe in providing our customers with more than just good food and drinks. We believe in creating a welcoming atmosphere where everyone feels comfortable and at home. We strive to provide exceptional service and make every visit a memorable one,” The Peculiar Pub’s webpage says.

Playing no small part in delivering on that promise of a good time is Breiner himself, known for his sense of fun, his rapport with guests and staff alike and his hands-on approach to business.

He is also known for his support of veterans. Breiner founded Lakewood Ranch Main Street’s annual Tribute to Heroes Parade, which has been held for more than a decade each Memorial Day.

Drinks served at The Peculiar Pub include 23 draft beers, wine and seltzers, while the bites include savory sandwiches like pastrami on rye, ham and Swiss melt, turkey club and more, as well as hot dogs.

The hot dogs include New York-style (two all-beef hot dogs served with spicy mustard and sauerkraut), the Coney Dog (two all-beef hot dogs topped with house beef chili, diced onions and shredded cheddar jack cheese) and the Peculiar Chicago Dog (two all-beef hot dogs with a pickle spear, mustard, relish, chopped onions, tomato, and jalapenos).

Also available: nachos, pretzel sticks and chips and dips.

The Peculiar Pub features seven big-screen TVs.

Breiner is also the founder of Wolves Head Pizza and Wings at at 1837 Lakewood Ranch Blvd., a business that he sold in May, and Ed’s Tavern, which he started in 2008 and sold in 2014.

Ed’s Tavern on Lakewood Ranch Main Street was named for an establishment opened by his great-uncle in Saddle Brook, N.J., in 1935.

Family also played an important part in his decision to open The Peculiar Pub. John and his wife, Jackie, have two sons, Derek and Jason, who are now college students. It seemed that with the boys out of the nest, maybe 57 was too young to be retiring.

Breiner plans to feature local musicians playing live music starting in October, and plans to have his grand opening Oct. 14.

Initially, hours at The Peculiar Pub are 3-9 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, noon-10 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and noon-7 p.m. Sunday.
