Hunsader Farms points to development after suspected coyote attack that killed sheep

Three sheep were killed at Hunsader Farms, according to an Instagram post from the East Manatee farm.

In the social media post, Hunsader Farms said they believed a large pack of coyotes killed the sheep, injured four goats and donkeys were in the pasture with them. The injured animals are being treated with antibiotics and pain medicine, they said.

“In over 30 years of having animals, this has NEVER happened,” part of the Instagram post read. “Unfortunately, our county keeps approving commercial and residential development past the urban boundary line, pushing wildlife out of their homes around us and into the rural areas that are still left, including farms and ranches.”

In May, developer Carlos Beruff won approval to rezone more than 1,380 acres of agricultural land into a new development called East River Ranch, the Bradenton Herald previously reported.

East River Ranch has plans to build 5,378 dwelling units just south of Hunsader Farms and backs up to another large property in Myakka City where Schroeder-Manatee Ranch will build 4,500 single-family homes on 2,307 acres.

In February, the busy area north of State Road 70 found its way on Gov. Ron DeSantis’ list of recommended funding proposals to improve highway safety and relieve congestion.

The proposal has $53 million for widening S.R. 70 between Bourneside Boulevard and Waterbury Road, more commonly referred to as County Road 675.

Developer Carlos Beruff plans to build 5,370 housing units on land now zoned for agriculture near Hunsader Farms, shown above Jan. 31, 2023. Also planned there: 900,000-square-feet of commercial, 300,000-square-feel of self storage, 300,000-square-feet of office space. It could also include a charter school and a fire station.
