GoFundMe raises $35,000 for Bradenton teen killed in Manatee River jet ski accident
An online fundraiser for a Bradenton family suffering the loss of one child and critical injuries to another has raised more than $35,000 in less than two weeks.
A July 15 boating accident on the Manatee River claimed the life of 14-year-old Hunter Ganey and left his 17-year-old brother James in critical condition when a jet ski crashed into their boat, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
The two teenagers began their fishing trip at the Fort Hamer Boat Ramp, ABC Action News reports.
While Hunter died in the crash, James was brought to the ICU at Tampa General Hospital. FWC said in a statement provided to the Bradenton Herald Monday afternoon that James is continuing to receive medical treatment and his condition is being closely monitored by healthcare professionals.
A 45-year-old Palmetto resident was driving the jet ski that crashed into the boat, FWC said. The agency did not share details about whether the driver was also injured in the crash.
“The FWC extends its deepest condolences to the families affected by this tragic event. This loss of life is profoundly felt by our agency and the entire Manatee County community. Our thoughts are with the victims, their family and all those affected during this extremely difficult time,” FWC wrote in an email.
The GoFundMe has raised $35,669 as of Monday evening, more than $10,000 over its $25,000 goal. Proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward covering funeral costs and medical expenses, as well as helping the family pay bills while they are forced to miss work.
The family says any amount is appreciated and is asking those who cannot donate to consider sharing the GoFundMe to help spread the word.
There was an outpouring of love and support in the comments of the GoFundMe, both from those who knew Hunter and James and from those who did not.
“I want to support the community when someone has experienced an unexpected tragedy. I hope my contribution can help with their funeral and hospital expenses. And my prayers give them comfort,” wrote Rebecca Baker.
Jan Elasser wrote that the situation is heartbreaking and wanted James to know that “your little brother will always be with you.”
Hunter was an avid fisherman, the GoFundMe says.
“Hunter was quite the outdoorsman and such a caring young man who loved fishing. He leaves behind his immediate family, which includes his mother, Katie, father, Ray, brother, James, sister, Mackenzie, brother, Colton.”
The accident is being investigated by the FWC in collaboration with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office. As of Monday evening, it was unclear whether any charges would be filed in the fatal accident.
“We remain committed to understanding the full sequence of events that led up to this devastating incident,” the FWC wrote in a statement Monday.
