60-year-old bicyclist killed crossing U.S. 301 in Ellenton, FHP says

A Sarasota man is dead after he was hit by a car while cycling across U.S. 301 in Ellenton on Saturday night, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The crash happened at 9:47 p.m. on U.S. 301 near Palm Avenue, troopers said.

The 60-year-old Sarasota man was riding his bicycle south across U.S. 301 when he was hit by a sedan traveling west on the highway.

He sustained critical injuries and was taken to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Crash investigators say the cyclist was not wearing a helmet.

The driver of the sedan, a 32-year-old Ellenton man, was not injured.

The crash remained under investigation Sunday morning, FHP said.
