This downtown Bradenton cafe has new French owners who are trained crepe masters
Sweet Deli Cafe in downtown Bradenton has new owners and a new house specialty — crepes.
Frederique Guette and her husband, Frederic Guette, took over Sweet Deli Cafe, 531 13th St. W., in March.
While they kept the existing menu, including all-day breakfasts (avocado toast, egg and cheese sandwiches, smoked salmon, waffles and more), sandwiches, paninis, soups, desserts and hot and cold drinks, they added an extensive crepe menu.
Guests can choose from a variety of savory crepes, made from buckwheat flour, or sweet crepes, made from regular wheat flour.
Among the savory crepe options are the Chef’s Favorite (crispy bacon, tomatoes, onion and Swiss cheese) for $10.99, the Belle Complete (ham, egg and Swiss cheese) for $8.99, the Striking Viking (smoked salmon, dill lemon cream sauce and spinach) for $11.99, and more.
The sweet crepe options include Sweet Classique (sugar and butter) for $6, Beautiful Citron (lemon, sugar and butter) for $7, Amazing Bounty (homemade chocolate ganache and coconut flakes) for $8.50, and more.
Frederique is originally from Paris, but came to the United States as an exchange student, attending high school in Kansas City.
“It’s where I fell in love with the United States,” she said.
Frederic is originally from Brittany in northwest France.
The Guettes previously had a food truck in Kansas City, specializing in crepes.
Fred and Fred, as the couple refer to themselves, are both culinary trained crepe masters.
Brittany is credited by numerous sources as the place where crepes originated in the 1300s.
“This is all about our roots in Brittany and the love of sharing the food from there,” Frederic said of crepes.
The couple says that their crepes will not only satisfy your taste buds but “give you a taste of the authentic Celtic area that is Brittany.”
Many of Sweet Deli Cafe’s customers come from the downtown Bradenton area for the sandwiches and hot or cold drinks, but as word of the new crepe offerings spreads, Fred and Fred say they are seeing more and more new faces.
Among the most popular sandwich choices are the Prime Turkey Bacon, the Reuben and the paninis, Frederique said.
Laurie Calderon is a valued staff member who worked for the previous owners.
“Laurie knows everything and can run the whole place. She’s the best ever,” Frederique said.
Sweet Deli Cafe is open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and offers indoor and outdoor seating.
“We do a lot of catering. That’s an important part of our business,” Frederique said.
“People find us on EZ Cater and on our website,” she said.
