Southeast High School is looking to its past success to lead its athletic department into the future.

Matt Kitchie was named the Seminoles’ new athletic director this week. Kitchie recently was Lennard High School’s head football coach in Ruskin, and is a former Saint Stephen’s Episcopal School head coach.

He’s a Southeast High alum, playing on the 1993 and 1994 state championship football teams. Southeast head football coach Brett Timmons was also a member of those teams.

The 1994 Southeast team was ranked No. 1 in the nation at the start of the season, which was the first time a Manatee County program accomplished the feat.

Kitchie became Lennard’s head coach in 2016. During his tenure, the Longhorns were 11-52. Their best season was in 2019 when they went 7-4.

Principal Ginger Collins and a selection committee chose Kitchie after an extensive search, a news release said.

“It is with great joy to welcome him back to Nole Nation,” the release said.
