Should Bradenton Beach get a new 4-story hotel? Here’s how over 500 people voted

Manatee County residents, snowbirds and day-trippers to Anna Maria Island all weighed in on whether a four-story rooftop hotel would be a good fit for the island in a poll the Bradenton Herald created last week.

Over 500 people responded, with an overwhelming vote of 430 opposing the proposed hotel and 77 in favor of it.

The majority said no to the resort-style hotel coming for a number of reasons.

Many expressed concern it would take away from the island’s “old Florida” charm and cause more traffic issues on the island, which already struggles with parking.

“No. You’re changing the whole feel of the island. There’s plenty of rentals,” a current resident and former tourist said. “Don’t ruin AMI and the charm that makes the island unique.”

Those who agree with the construction of a hotel with restaurants and a parking garage said it would show how “progressive” the island is and could work if the development could help alleviate other issues.

“Yes, this proposal includes enough parking and it is not on the beach,” a county resident, shared. “It would be located in an area that is already commercial.”

“I believe it will fit in and be a great addition to our area,” they said.

Both those in favor and those opposed to the hotel describe parking as having a significant impact on their opinions.

Many felt a parking garage would help with parking issues and that the correct kind of hotel could blend in with the island’s aesthetic.

The City of Bradenton Beach government has the final say on whether or not the hotel will be built.
