A 27-year-old Bradenton man has died after he was hit by an SUV while crossing U.S. 41 on a bicycle, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The wreck happened around 9:15 p.m. Saturday on U.S. 41 (also known as 14th Street West), south of 50th Avenue Plaza West in Manatee County.

The bicyclist was traveling west across U.S. 41 when troopers say he entered into the path of an SUV traveling north and was hit head-on by the vehicle.

The bicycle rider was taken to Blake Medical Center with critical injuries, where he later died.

He also was not wearing a helmet, FHP said.

The SUV driver, a 53-year-old Bradenton man, was uninjured.
