Should Florida 6th graders be asked about ‘stolen’ 2020 election? Vote in our poll.
A Florida middle school assignment is causing a stir on social media after a teacher used it to reference former President Donald Trump’s claims of a ‘stolen’ election.
The assignment taught students about bias in the media, but a concerned parent said they were disappointed by the examples shown in the lesson. In a study guide for a social studies lesson about how historians work, the teacher used “false claims that the 2020 election was stolen,” as an example of media bias.
“The media is often biased and will add words that persuade you to think one way over another. Read these two statements made by reporters after the 2020 election,” the assignment said. “President Trump made claims that the 2020 election was stolen. President Trump made false claims that the 2020 election was stolen.”
“The first sentence is just giving you information, while the second sentence leads you to believe he is wrong before you have all of the facts,” the assignment continued.
In a statement provided to the Bradenton Herald Thursday, the School District of Manatee County said the Nolan Middle School assignment “did not meet” the district’s expectations.
We want to know what you think about the assignment. Do you believe it was OK for the teacher to include this kind of political content in a study guide for sixth-grade students? Sound off in the interactive poll below.
