Tiger Woods announces new putting tournament at PopStroke Sarasota with $100K in prizes

Tiger Woods announced Thursday his company PopStroke Entertainment Group will host a new three-day international putting competition at the PopStroke location in Sarasota and Manatee County’s University Town Center with $100,000 in prizes for winners.

The PopStroke Tour Championship, in partnership with the TaylorMade Golf Company, will be Oct. 26-28, 2022, at PopStroke Sarasota next to the Mall at University Town Center (UTC).

“I am excited to launch the PopStroke Tour Championship,” Tiger Woods said in a statement. “Putting is the great equalizer in the game of golf. We look forward to watching the competition unfold with players from all over the globe.”

Amateur and professional golfers from around the world can register now to compete in the televised 72-hole tournament.

There are 250 spots available for teams and individuals who want to compete.

A total of 400 golfers on 200 teams will compete in the tournament to win a portion of $100,000.

The winning team will take home $20,000 to share, and 40 additional teams who make it to the third round of play will also earn a cash prize.

In the individual competition, 100 people will compete for a grand prize of $5,00. After the first two rounds, 50 golfers will be eliminated from the tournament, and the top 40 golfers remaining in the third round will earn a cash prize.

Ultimately, the winners of the team competition will move on to play two PGA professionals in a winner-take-all mini golf showdown for a prize of $25,000.

The showdown match and highlights from the Team & Stroke Play Championships will be broadcast in an hour-long television feature.

PopStroke Director of Marketing and Public Relations Melissa Sullivan told the Bradenton Herald on Thursday they will announce which network will televise the tournament at a later date.

PopStroke Founder Greg Bartoli said, “Putting is the most important, and often overlooked, skill in the game of golf,” he said. “We have created a National Putting Championship where players can go head-to-head regardless of credentials, age, or gender to earn tour-size cash.”

This fall, qualifiers will be held at:

  • The Lawn at Deerpath Golf Club in Lake Forest, Illinois on Sept. 10
  • Thorny Lea Golf Club outside Boston on Sept. 17
  • Independence Golf Club in Richmond, Virginia, on Sept. 23

Those are in addition to two qualifiers hosted by the South Florida PGA and North Florida PGA sections. Details have not yet been released on those.

In future years, PopStroke plans to bring qualifiers to golf clubs and Popstroke locations across the nation, including at Fort Myers and Orlando.

Registration opened at 8 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 23 at popstroke.com/pct
