Manatee animal shelters near ‘critical capacity.’ Fees lowered, foster parents needed

Manatee County Animal Services is on the verge of reaching capacity and will offer special pricing for pet adoptions and free pet supplies to kitten foster parents this month.

In May, 445 pets were brought to the county shelters, and they are reaching “critical capacity” with over 250 animals available for new homes.

All pet adoption prices are $15 from now until June 30 and include spaying or neutering, a microchip and rabies certificate.

Fees are waived completely for pets who have been at the shelter for over 60 days and those seven-years-old or older.

Military, veterans and first responders with ID also will have adoption fees waived.

However, each adoption requires a new pet license. The license cost $20.

Animal Services particularly needs help finding homes for kittens this time of year, and they are seeking foster parents.

Those who temporarily foster any animal will receive pet supplies provided by Animal Services. So, all the new foster parents will have to do is give TLC to the animal they take home.

June is Adopt-A-Shelter-Cat Month, which marks the height of kitten season. A high volume of kittens are born and often many of them end up in animal shelters.

Manatee County Animal Services is seeking donations to help keep supplies stocked for kitten season. To make a charitable donation, visit their Amazon wish list at https://bit.ly/smilefomcas.

The Palmetto Adoption Center and Shelter is located at 305 25th Street West in Palmetto, and Manatee County Cat Town is located at 216 6th Avenue East in Bradenton.

Appointments are preferred, and walk-ins will be accommodated when available.

You can plan your visit by going to mymanatee.org/pets to view all adoptable pets and schedule an appointment.
