Bradenton teen killed when car flips into pond, FHP says

A 17-year-old Bradenton boy is dead after the car he was driving traveled off of a Manatee County roadway and overturned in a pond, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release on Sunday.

The incident happened at 4:50 a.m. Sunday on 44th Avenue East, east of 19th Street Court East in Bradenton, the agency said.

Troopers say the 17-year-old was driving a sedan westbound on 44th Avenue. For an unknown reason, the car left its travel lane and crossed a median, sidewalk and grass shoulder before flipping into a pond located along 44th Avenue.

The car came to a stop upside down in the pond, crash investigators say. The 17-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene. It is unknown whether he was wearing a seat belt.

The crash remains under investigation, FHP said Sunday morning.
