Crash with electric pole in Palmetto leaves two dead, one seriously injured

Two people were killed and another person was seriously injured when a car spun out of control and went off of a Palmetto street early Sunday morning, Florida Highway Patrol said in a news release.

The wreck happened at 1:11 a.m. Sunday on 17th Street East, west of Second Avenue East, FHP said.

Before the crash, a 31-year-old Palmetto man was driving a sedan eastbound on 17th Street. A 35-year-old Palmetto man and a 32-year-old Palmetto woman were in the passengers seats.

Troopers say that the driver failed to maintain control of the vehicle. It then traveled across the median, rotated and traveled into the south shoulder of 17th Street, where it collided with a chain link fence and then into a concrete electrical pole.

The two Palmetto men were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, and the Palmetto woman was seriously injured, the release said.

Traffic investigators say none of the vehicle occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision. No other details were provided.

The crash remained under investigation on Sunday afternoon.
