Woman who died after being hit by Manatee deputy’s vehicle has been ID’d, sheriff says

Update 2/25/22: The woman who died has been identified as Theresa Cora Holt, 78, of Sarasota.

A Manatee County sheriff’s deputy hit and killed a woman walking on a dark road early Thursday in Sarasota, the sheriff’s office said in a news release.

The crash happened on the 6400 block of 15th Street East at 3:45 a.m., while the deputy was on patrol duty, sheriff’s spokesman Randy Warren said in a news release.

The deputy was driving south on 15th Street East when the deputy saw a woman “walking into his path of travel.”

The deputy tried to avoid her, the press release said, but the right front bumper of the patrol vehicle hit her and she slid onto the hood, hit the windshield and rolled into the road.

EMS responded and tried to revive her but she was pronounced dead at 3:52 a.m. The deputy was uninjured.

“The portion of the roadway, where the crash occurred was dark and poorly lit,” the press release said. “Investigations by MCSO Traffic Homicide Unit and Professional Standards are ongoing.”

Three pedestrians were hit and killed in Sarasota this weekend, and pedestrian deaths have soared nationwide during the pandemic according to a report by the Governors Highway Safety Association.
