Southbound I-75 lanes in southern Sarasota County closed after fuel tanker flips over
Drivers heading south Tuesday on Interstate 75 will need to find an alternate route approaching Charlotte County.
The southbound lanes on I-75 are closed following a fuel tanker overturning just after 5 a.m. Tuesday near mile marker 172, near North Port, in southern Sarasota County, the Florida High Patrol said.
According to a press release, the fuel tanker “experienced a catastrophic failure of a tire,” that sent it to exit the roadway onto a grassy shoulder, before continuing in a southwest direction where it struck a fence line.
The tanker, which was driven by a 40-year-old Palm Harbor man, overturned and came to rest on its right side facing southwest. The driver was transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, FHP said.
Additionally, HAZMAT crews are also assessing fuel leakage, FHP said.
North Port Police said in a tweet that the tanker leaked roughly 200 gallons of fuel.
FHP said it is investigating the crash and charges are pending the completion of the crash investigation.
