A 92-year-old Sun City woman was airlifted to Blake Medical Center in serious condition after a car accident Wednesday afternoon in northeast Manatee County, the Florida Highway Patrol said.

The woman, who was wearing a seat belt, was driving west on U.S. 301 in the outside lane behind an SUV as the two vehicles approached the intersection with 91st Avenue East, FHP said.

The SUV stopped due to traffic congestion, FHP said, while the woman “failed to ensure proper stopping distance,” and hit the rear of the SUV.

She was airlifted with serious injuries, while the driver of the SUV, a 74-year-old Canadian woman, and a passenger, a 50-year-old Parrish man, had minor injuries, FHP said. They both were wearing seat belts, FHP said.
