Pulling from the top 500 costume searches in the United States, Frightgeist used Google Trends to tell people what costumes were trending around them and help them find a costume that was sure to turn heads.”
There are some classics that made the cut among the most popular Halloween costumes in the Bradenton/Sarasota area.
Here’s a look at the top five, according to Google’s Frightgeist:
1. Spider-Man
The long celebrated comic book superhero gets its third standalone installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) when Spider-Man: No Way Home gets released in December, so it’s no wonder it charts as a popular choice locally.
2. Dinosaur
Who hasn’t worn or seen someone else don a dinosaur costume when they were growing up? It’s a classic that didn’t go down in popularity after Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Park became a blockbuster movie franchise that is still going strong today. It’s the third-most popular costume nationally this Halloween via the Frightgeist data, but ranks second locally.
3. Velma Dinkley
A Scooby Doo character that received some controversial criticism over the summer comes in third locally for Halloween costumes to don in 2021. Warner Bros. announced in the summer that Velma would be portrayed as East Asian in the new Mindy Kaling HBO Max show, which caused it to trend on Twitter with various criticisms lobbed at the portrayal. Despite that, it’s a popular costume for anyone locally this Halloween.
4. Cruella de Vil
The Disney film explored the origin story of one of its villains, with Emma Stone as the movie’s title character. We see the transformation of Cruella into Cruella de Vil, and with the amount of hype surrounding the movie, it’s no wonder it’s one of top five Halloween costumes in the area for 2021.
5. Tinkerbell
J.M. Barrie’s masterpiece brought to life by Disney has taken the Tinkerbell character and made it a timeless classic Halloween costume. It just makes the cut, according to the Frightgeist local top five, but it’s been a hallmark for the October holiday for years.
