Drug Free Manatee is celebrating 20 years in substance abuse prevention in Manatee County with a couple events to coincide with Red Ribbon Week.

Starting Wednesday at 6:30 p.m., a candlelight vigil hosted by Mayor Gene Brown honors those lost to addiction and substance abuse. There’s also a Red Ribbon Interactive Experience on Thursday at the Manatee River Garden Club, which features an art show, auction and Miss Florida’s Leah Roddenberry giving a special address.

Roddenberry was named a brand ambassador for Advanced Recovery System’s Real Talk program, where she educates people ages 13-and-older on substance abuse and addiction.

Drug Free Manatee also will honoring 14 — either individuals or organizations — as Champions of Prevention for Manatee County. For more information contact lthompson@drugfreemanatee.org.
