Outside fire forces evacuation of Walmart store in Palmetto

Several agencies are responded to an outside fire near the Wal-Mart Supercenter in Palmetto.

The fire was first reported Monday afternoon around 12:53 p.m., according to the Manatee County Department of Public Safety. By 1:14 p.m., the fire appeared to be under control.

The blaze, which sent black smoke billowing into the air, appeared to originate behind Wal-Mart, 508 10th St. E. The store was evacuated, but the structure was not in danger, according to firefighters on the scanner.

The source of the fire appeared to be several pallets and the brush behind the store, according to first responders on the scene.

Precautions were also taken due to several propane tanks in the area, a dispatcher said.
