Alligator crossing highway causes accident that kills Myakka City man, troopers say

A 23-year-old man died Thursday night after a vehicle he was a passenger in swerved to avoid an alligator crossing State Road 70 in Myakka City.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the accident took place at about 10:40 p.m. just east of Lowe Avenue while the pair of men were traveling east on State Road 70.

The alligator was crossing from south to north across the roadway. The driver took evasive action, which caused him to lose control of the vehicle.

The vehicle crossed the median, rotated into a ditch and crashed into a tree, killing the unidentified Myakka City man.

The 20-year-old Bradenton driver suffered minor injuries in the crash.
