10-year-old girl drowns off beach at Siesta Key

A 10-year-old Lake Wales girl died Sunday evening after drowning off the beach on Siesta Key, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

Just before 6:30 p.m Sunday., a mother and her two children were swimming when they got caught in a rip current off the beach in the 900 block of Beach Road, according to a news release. Bystanders called 911 and helped paramedics bring the three of them to shore.

The 10-year-old girl, Irys Wright, was unconscious. Paramedics attempted to revive the girl and took her to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Investigators with the sheriff’s office believe the rip current caused the drowning, and don’t suspect any foul play or neglect, based on their preliminary investigation and statements from witnesses. The investigation is pending an official cause of death from the medical examiner’s office.
