One dead, another critically injured in single-vehicle Manatee County crash, troopers say

Speeding has been deemed the cause of a deadly single-vehicle crash Saturday morning in Manatee County that killed a 30-year-old Fort Myers man and critically injured his 20-year-old passenger.

Darryl Byrd died at the scene and the passenger was taken to Blake Medical Center where he is listed in critical condition.

Troopers say the accident occurred on the southbound I-75 exit ramp at mile marker 224 around 1:45 a.m.

According to the crash report, Byrd was driving a 2020 Chevy Impala, “at a high rate of speed,” and lost control of the vehicle while trying to negotiate the rightward turn on the exit ramp.

The vehicle spun and crashed into a palm tree on the driver’s side.
