The Manatee County Utilities Department announced Friday evening that it plans to temporarily close the lobby of its administration building to prevent any possible spread of the novel coronavirus.

The lobby of the utilities building at 4410 66th St. W. in Bradenton will be closed until further notice. The department also said it is canceling E-Scrap and House Hazardous Waste collections that were scheduled for March 21 and April 4.

However, regular garbage, recycling and yard waste collections will continue as normal.

“The number of alternative methods of conducting business with the department minimizes any potential inconvenience to our customers, and closing the lobby greatly reduces any chance of spreading the virus,” said Utilities Director Mike Gore.

Manatee utilities customers will still be able to make payments using money orders or checks by using the drop box outside the utilities office or sending payments by mail. Payments can also be made online or by phone.

While President Donald Trump and Gov. Ron DeSantis have both made emergency declarations in response to the virus outbreak, county officials have yet to do so.
