Reports of massive Caribbean earthquake being felt in Manatee County and elsewhere in Tampa Bay

People in the Tampa Bay region, including in Manatee County, reported feeling what could have been the effects of the massive earthquake that struck the Caribbean on Tuesday.

The magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck at 2:10 p.m. Monday about six miles beneath the surface. It was centered south of Cuba and northwest of Jamaica, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

As of 8 p.m. Tuesday, there was one report to the USGS of the earthquake being felt in Bradenton, one report in Bradenton Beach on Anna Maria Island and one report in Parrish. There has also been one report of it being felt in Sarasota.

There have been four reports that the quake was felt in Tampa, 10 reports of it being felt in St. Petersburg, and one report each in Pinellas Park, Largo, Clearwater and Dunedin.

In Miami, several high-rise and government buildings have been evacuated as a precaution because of reports of the shaking being felt. Reports of the earthquake being felt in Florida reach as far north as Orlando and Tallahassee.
