Construction error causes 4,000 gallons of sewage to spill onto State Road 64

The air got a little ripe about 3:15 p.m. Wednesday in the area of State Road 64 and Rye Road after a construction worker cut into an 8-inch force main sewer line with a power saw.

According to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, which released a public notice of pollution on Thursday, 4,000 gallons of sewage spilled before the leak could be contained.

DEP reports that the contractor on site immediately dug out an excavation site to contain the spill and that none of the wastewater made its way to surface waters.

Lift stations were temporarily shut down while repairs were made to the line, which were completed around 6:30 p.m.
