Making a difference on MLK Day to help the environment. SCFCS students did their part

One student carefully packed dirt around the roots of a leafy plant as a speaker played upbeat music in a sunny courtyard Monday.

Around 50 students gathered at State College of Florida’s Collegiate School to celebrate the work of Martin Luther King Jr. by setting up stations to learn about recycling, planting herbs and even how pollutants enter the watershed.

“We’re inviting guests to come join us and learn a little bit about what they can do to help our environment,” said SCF President Carol Probstfeldt.

3-year-old Saia Rowland posed with a lollipop as her father, Kyle, took photos — a lot of photos.

“I’m here because my wife help set this up, it’s great!” he said.

Cassidy Smith, 15, used a model to teach people how pollution ends up in the water supply. She smiled a bit shyly as an announcement was made outside for her demonstration.

“I couldn’t be more proud of what our students are doing,” said Probstfeld.
