Traffic delays on Sunshine Skyway as agencies investigate water rescue beneath bridge

Traffic is slowed on the Sunshine Skyway Bridge Friday afternoon as emergency personnel investigate reports of an attempted suicide.

Several agencies responded to the call around 3:36 p.m., according to the Pinellas County Safety and Emergency Services. The news comes just days after the Florida Department of Transportation announced plans to install an 8-foot-high steel netting fence to reduce suicide attempts.

As first responders continue to investigate, southbound traffic on the Skyway is facing “severe” delays and congestion, according to Florida 511.

FDOT says the planned “suicide barrier” will cost about $3 million and installation may begin this summer.

If you or someone you know is considering suicide, contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255.
