One dead, others injured after crash involving police car on Longboat Key, cops say

A fatal crash involving two vehicles has shut down a portion of Gulf of Mexico Drive in the Town of Longboat Key.

The accident occurred in the 2100 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive on Wednesday evening.

One of the vehicles involved was a police car driven by an on-duty Longboat Key Police Department Officer.

The officer sustained non-life threatening injuries in the crash, according to Sarasota Police Department.

At least two people occupied the other vehicle that was involved in the crash.

One of the occupants was killed and another person was under trauma alert.

Gulf of Mexico Drive was shut down in both directions near the scene of the crash as of around 6:30 p.m., according to the Town of Longboat Key, and will remain closed until a crash investigation is complete.

Sarasota Police Department officers are on scene assisting.
