Fatal crash causes I-75 South closure in Sarasota, FHP says

A crash involving multiple vehicles is causing lane closures and traffic backups on I-75 South in Sarasota.

As of 7:56 p.m. Wednesday, all southbound lanes of I-75 were closed near Fruitville Road, according to the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office.

Fruitville Road is also closed near the interstate.

At least one person has died as a result of the accident, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

Emergency responders are at the scene.

Southbound traffic is being diverted off of the interstate at the University Parkway exit at mile marker 213, FHP says.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area and seek an alternate route for southbound travel.
