Tourist dies after being struck by vehicle while on vacation in Holmes Beach
An 80-year-old woman on vacation from Canada has died after she and her husband were struck by an SUV on Jan. 24 in Holmes Beach, according to the Holmes Beach Police Department.
The crash occurred around 2 p.m. in the 5600 block of Gulf Drive.
Marion Timmins died at Blake Medical Center in Bradenton. Her husband, 78-year-old William Timmins, had surgery and was reported to be in stable condition a few days later.
The couple was visiting Anna Maria Island on vacation from Ontario and was crossing Gulf Drive toward the beach when a southbound driver in a 2016 Chevy Suburban struck them, according to the police report.
The driver told police she saw the couple at the last second and tried to stop but failed to do so in time. There is no crosswalk in that area and the couple attempted to cross on a curve.
Authorities don’t plan to charge the driver, who they say is not at fault and was traveling 30 mph in a 35-mph zone.
“This is a tragedy,” said Holmes Beach Police Chief Bill Tokajer. “But we always recommend that people cross in a marked crosswalk.”
