Nineteen teams representing seven high schools from Manatee and Sarasota counties will compete in the Manasota Regional Envirothon 2018 on Thursday beginning at 9 a.m. at Oscar Scherer State Park, 1843 Tamiami Trail, Osprey.

High schools represented include Bayshore, Manatee, Palmetto, Riverview, Sarasota, Suncoast Polytechnical and Venice. About 100 students will be competing for awards and a chance to represent their county in the State Envirothon in the spring.

The State Envirothon will send the winning Florida team to compete at the North American Canon Envirothon to be held in July at Idaho State University in Pocatello, Idaho.

By pooling their knowledge as a team, the competition prepares students to solve current problems in our environment and become responsible stewards of the environment as adults. Students will be tested in the areas of forestry, soils, aquatics, wildlife and the current issue topic of “Rangeland Management.”

For more information, contact Gail Somodi, Envirothon coordinator/soil conservation supervisor, at 941-444-3142.
