26-year-old Venice man dies after collision throws him from motorcycle
A 26-year-old man died over the weekend after a vehicle pulled in front of the motorcycle he was driving, causing a collision that led to him and a passenger being ejected from the bike, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The incident occurred around 5:10 p.m. on Friday evening on U.S. 41.
An 89-year-old Nokomis man was driving a 2011 Toyota Camry and was stopped facing eastbound in the entrance-exit to Venice Toyota at 900 U.S. 41 Bypass, troopers said.
Around the same time 26-year-old Dakota Winke, of Venice, was driving a 2011 Kawasaki motorcycle on U.S. 41, in the inside lane.
The elderly driver of the Toyota failed to yield to the approaching motorcycle, troopers said, and attempted to cross over the southbound lanes of U.S. 41. As a result, the front of the motorcycle collided with the left rear side of the car.
After impact, the Toyota spun and came to rest within the paved median. Winke and his passenger, a 21-year-old woman from Cape Coral, were both ejected from the motorcycle.
They were transported to Sarasota Memorial Hospital with serious injuries. Winke died the next day, troopers said.
An investigation is ongoing.
