Blackout at Atlanta airport sends ripples to Florida airports
Even with the power back at the world’s busiest airport, there are still some impacts locally from the hours-long outage in Atlanta.
Sunday, a fire — the cause of which is unknown — caused “extensive damage” to an electrical facility, causing a power outage at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Georgia Power said in a statement to the Associated Press.
Shortly after midnight, airport officials announced on Twitter that power had been restored to all concourses, passengers were being fed and that trains would soon be operational.
Still, passengers in Sarasota-Bradenton and Tampa were left with canceled flights early Monday morning. As the day wears on, flights appear to get back on schedule for most airlines.
As of Monday morning, one flight scheduled for 7:50 a.m. Monday from Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport to Atlanta was canceled. Mike Schukrast, operations officer for SRQ, said Sunday night the Monday morning flights were canceled because they would not have the aircraft at SRQ.
However, an afternoon flight to Atlanta was scheduled to depart on-time at 12:35 p.m. A 3:55 p.m. flight was delayed about 10 minutes, according to the SRQ flight status website.
An evening Delta flight scheduled for 6:55 p.m. was expected to depart on time.
For those arriving at SRQ from Hartsfield-Jackson, a flight at 11:19 a.m. Monday was scheduled to land on-time. Flights at 3:15 p.m. at 6 p.m. were on-time, according to the SRQ flight status website. An 11:10 p.m. Delta flight was also slated to take off on time.
In Tampa, flights to Atlanta delayed from Sunday night were finally taking off Monday morning. Two Delta flights originally scheduled to leave Sunday night were slated to take off by 7 a.m. Monday.
However, three Delta flights scheduled to depart from the Tampa International Airport Monday morning were canceled, as well as one Delta arrival, according to the Tampa International Airport flight status website.
But Tampa was still seeing some delays Monday afternoon.
One Delta flight into Atlanta from Tampa was delayed about 20 minutes Monday afternoon, pushed to 4:30 p.m. A Southwest flight was also delayed about 30 minutes and was scheduled to take off shortly after 5 p.m.
Evening flights out of Tampa appear to be on time as of 4 p.m.
Two Delta flights scheduled to arrive in Tampa from Hartsfield-Jackson was expected to arrive about 10 minutes late, at 4:39 and 5:59 p.m. Monday, the flight status website showed.
Delta is headquartered in Atlanta.
Evening flights into Tampa on all airlines are planning on-time arrivals, as of 4 p.m. Monday.
