A pedestrian was killed after being struck by a car on Interstate 275 in Hillsborough County early Sunday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

For unknown reasons, 19-year-old Justin Martinez-Sanchez was attempting to cross northbound I-275 south of MLK Boulevard shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday when he was struck by a 2011 Audi A4, according to FHP.

Martinez-Sanchez was pronounced dead at the scene.

After the crash, the driver of the Audi fled the scene, stopping at a gas station along US-92, according to FHP. The driver then fled the gas station on foot while two passengers in the car stayed at the gas station and called law enforcement, the press release stated.

Law enforcement continues to search for the driver, who was wearing jeans and a black shirt, is 20-25 years of age and about 6 feet tall.

Charges are pending.
