League of Women Voters of Manatee holding session to discuss computer, phone fraud

The League of Women Voters of Manatee County will hold a free informative program, “Self Protection in the Digital Age,” on Monday at the Manatee County Central Library, 1301 Barcarotta Blvd. W.

Lt. Robert Andrews of the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office and Officer Kimberly Comancho of the Bradenton Police Department’s Crime Prevention Division will talk about identity theft, computer hacking, phone scams and other issues that citizens should be aware of in the digital age.

“Nearly everyone has gotten emails from people claiming to be friends in trouble, or calls with offers that sound legitimate. Our speakers from law enforcement will tell us what to look for and how to protect yourself and your computer,” Rosalie Shaffer, president of the LWVMC, said in a press release.

The session is from noon to 1 p.m. Reservations are not required, but audience members are asked to arrive by 11:45 a.m. For more information, call 941-729-9248.
