Ellenton man killed, two children in vehicle escape injury in crash

An Ellenton man was killed and two children in the vehicle escaped injury in a Friday night crash on Interstate 75 in Manatee County.

Florida Highway Patrol reports show a 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt, driven by a 24-year-old Bradenton man, was traveling north in the left lane of I-75 near State Road 70 around 9:12 p.m. when the driver made an improper lane change into the right lane.

The Cobalt struck the left side of a 2006 Ford Expedition. The Ford went off the road and overturned several times before it came to rest on its roof on the east shoulder of the interstate.

Thomas I. Baker, 46, of Ellenton, the driver of the Ford, was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital, where he died from his injures, according to FHP.

Two girls, ages 10 and 7, were in the Ford when the crash occurred and were also take to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. FHP reports indicate they were not injured in the crash.

Charges are pending, and the crash remains under investigation.
