Bradenton dental clinic to ‘buy back’ Halloween treats

Kids work so hard trick-or-treating on Halloween for all those sugary snacks and now a local dental practice wants to buy some of that precious candy back? Sounds like the work of the Grinch.

Actually, Parkwood Dental East officials say it’s all to benefit the children in the long run, whose teeth could be ravaged by the sugar if the kids actually consume all of the treats rather than just a portion.

Parkwood Dental East’s “Halloween Candy Buy Back” is part of a national campaign to create a teeth-healthy Halloween and to benefit U.S. troops overseas, who will receive the excess candy, said Jodie Hernandez, a Parkwood Dental spokeswoman.

During the event set for 3:30-6 p.m. Nov. 1 at 5220 Fourth Ave. Circle E., Bradenton, kids and their parents can bring excess candy to the dentist, receive $1 per pound in return. The candy will be sent to soldiers through Operation Shoebox, Hernandez said.

Kids will also have the opportunity to write to the soldiers who receive the candy, Hernandez added.
