Local officials react to mass shooting in Las Vegas

Local officials have been tweeting their condolences and prayers to those affected by the mass shooting that unfolded overnight in Las Vegas.

“Praying for the victims and families of last night’s horrific tragedy in Las Vegas. Heartbreaking,” Rep. Vern Buchanan tweeted Monday morning.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all the victims of this horrific attack. As the investigation continues, we will learn more about what led to this tragedy in Las Vegas, but at some point we, as a society, have to stand up and say enough is enough,” Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Florida, said in a statement.

“Today America woke up to the worst mass shooting in its history and we are devastated. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of the victims and their families who are suffering unimaginable loss. Thank you to our first responders for their courage and swift action. We are heartbroken. Our love, support, and deepest condolences to everyone in the Silver State,” Florida Democratic Party President Sally Boynton Brown said in a statement.

Tampa International Airport and the Bradenton Marauders also tweeted thoughts and prayers for the victims.

The shooting, which killed more than 50 people and injured more than 400, is the largest mass shooting in U.S. history.

Two off-duty police officers who were attending the concert were among the dead. Two other on-duty officers were wounded, leaving one in critical condition, police said.

Stephen Paddock, 64, was identified by authorities as the gunman who opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino into the crowd at an outdoor music festival.

Paddock killed himself during a standoff with police, Sheriff Joseph Lombardo told reporters.

Lombardo said they believe it was a “lone wolf” attack.
