Zika case confirmed in Pinellas County
Zika has been confirmed in Pinellas County.
The case of sexually transmitted Zika virus in Pinellas County is the first of 2017, according to the Florida Department of Health.
The person had not traveled, however their partner had traveled to Cuba and was sick with symptoms consistent with Zika, according to the Department of Health. Both people tested positive for the virus.
The Department of Health notified mosquito control and appropriate mosquito reduction activities are taking place, according to the release.
There is no evidence of ongoing transmission of Zika by mosquitoes in any area of Florida, the department emphasized in the release.
A total of 118 Zika cases have been reported in Florida this year, according to the Department of Health.
Before traveling, check to see if the destination is on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) list of areas with Zika.
“If you traveled to an area with Zika, you could have become infected and not know it, and could spread the virus in your community if you do not take proper precautions to prevent mosquito bites or sexual transmission after you return home,” the release stated. “It is critical for those who recently traveled overseas to an area with Zika to prevent mosquito bites for at least three weeks after they return home. It is also important to reduce the chance of sexual transmission by using condoms.”
