Two drivers killed in separate single-vehicle crashes this weekend
One person was killed in a single-vehicle crash Saturday evening on Interstate 275 in Pinellas County.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the driver of a 2002 Chevrolet Cavalier lost control of the vehicle after the left, rear tire failed shortly after 6:30 p.m. on northbound I-275 north of 4th Street North. The vehicle entered the shoulder and collided with an overhead sign pole.
The driver, 20-year-old Gabriel A. Matthews, was transported to an area hospital where he later passed away.
Another driver was killed in a wreck at 2:30 a.m. Sunday on westbound Interstate 4 in Hillsborough County.
According to the FHP release, the driver of a 2003 Honda Odyssey reached for an object in the vehicle while in the outside lane near Mile Marker 16 and became distracted, losing control and entering the center median, where it struck the guardrail.
The driver, a 43-year-old man from Apopka, was ejected from the vehicle and later died at an area hospital, according to FHP. His identity has not been released pending next of kin notification. Two passengers in the car were hospitalized with minor injuries.
According to the release, the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, but both passengers were.
