Palmetto man dies after car crashes into fence, tree

A 56-year-old man died after his vehicle hit a barbed wire fence and a tree Tuesday morning in Palmetto.

Johnnie D. Altman, 56, of Palmetto, was driving a 2011 Toyota Yaris north on Eighth Avenue West near 31st Lane West shortly before 10:30 a.m. when the vehicle crossed the center line and went into the southbound lane, according to Florida Highway Patrol.

The vehicle continued going north going off the roadway and onto the west shoulder of Eighth Avenue West, colliding with a barbed wire fence, according to FHP.

The front left of the vehicle then hit a tree on the west shoulder of the road and stopped in the north and southbound lanes of Eighth Avenue West, according to FHP.
