Deadline nears for annual veteran award nominations

The Aug. 1 deadline for submission of recommendations for the Col. Frederick J. Graves Veteran of the Year Award, auxiliary member of the year award, and for the non-veteran of the year award is approaching.

Carl Hunsinger, chairman of the Manatee County Veterans Council, Thursday encouraged local veterans posts, and anyone in the public who knows potential worthy award recipients, to make a nomination. Award recipients will be recognized on Veterans Day.

In other business Thursday:

  • Carl Nothdurft, chair of the Veterans Educating Today’s Students program, said he is seeking more veteran volunteers to help deliver a program on respect, display, and history of the American flag to Manatee County classrooms. He can be reached at 941-807-9077.
  • Hunsinger announced the Veterans Council will meet at 11 a.m. the third Thursday of each month at Kirby Stewart American Legion Post 24, 2000 75th St. W., through the end of 2017, except in August. That month the council will meet at Christ Episcopal Church, 4030 Manatee Ave. W.
  • Meshia Richardson, who heads up the Flags for the Fallen campaign which placed 11,600 flags on graves at Sarasota National Cemetery on Memorial Day, is also assuming leadership of the Wreaths Across America for the cemetery. There will be 14,500 wreaths placed on veterans graves there in December.
