Flag Day ceremony set at American Legion post
Manatee County residents are invited to a Flag Day ceremony 11 a.m. Wednesday at American Legion Kirby Stewart Post 24, 2000 75th St. W.
In addition to encouraging the practice of displaying the American flag at homes and businesses on Flag Day, the American Legion also encourages proper retirement of worn, faded or frayed flags.
“The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning,” the U.S. Flag Code states.
Post Commander John Rauh will lead the ceremony, which will feature an honor guard, and the retirement of one flag, symbolic of the hundreds the post burns throughout the year.
President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation on May 30, 1916, calling for a nationwide observance of Flag Day. President Harry Truman signed an Act Of Congress in 1949, designating June 14 as National Flag Day every year, according to the National Flag Day Foundation.
