Public input will be sought on Thursday evening at the Palmetto Library, 923 Sixth St. West, beginning at 5:30 p.m., for the city’s Complete Street project planned for 2021 along 10th Avenue West from Riverside Drive West to 17th Street West.

The Florida Department of Transportation is hosting the event as part of its feasibility study to help develop alternatives for the project.

The project is part of the five remaining phases of the city’s multimodal trail.

The city celebrated the completion of the first leg in February and funding is in place for the final phases to begin in 2021. FDOT communications specialist Robin Stublen said Thursday’s meeting will include a power point presentation, project displays and aerial photographs, and project team members will be on hand to answer questions and receive feedback.

Stublen said people should consider elements involving sidewalks, on-street parking, landscaped medians, potential bike lanes and more.

Mayor Shirley Groover Bryant said there is a lot that goes into designing a Green Street.

We want it to be a synopsis of what the community wants.

Palmetto Mayor Shirley Groover Bryant

“I’ve had some smaller meetings with individuals and groups and try to explain the concept,” Groover said. “This is really a good opportunity for people to come out and see what a Green Street is and what goes into it to get a bird’s eye view, get an explanation and have an understanding of what the project entails.”

Bryant said she is hopeful for a large turnout based on the importance of the project.

“This is going to have a tremendously positive impact on the city of Palmetto,” she said. “We are looking to make a really huge impact, but we, as a city, always go a step beyond.”

Bryant said it can’t just be a city plan, however, and she wants as much citizen comment as possible.

“We don’t want a plan on a piece of paper done in a vacuum,” she said. “We want it to be a synopsis of what the community wants.”
