One dead, another in critical condition after head-on crash on State Road 70
One driver was killed and the other is in critical condition after a head-on crash about 7:30 a.m. Monday on State Road 70 in east Manatee County.
According to a press release from the Florida Highway Patrol, a 2012 Hyundai Santa Fe was traveling eastbound on State Road 70 behind a pickup truck. As the truck slowed down to make a left turn into the Myakka Church of God, located east of M&J Road, the driver of the Santa Fe took evasive action to the left, the release stated. The Santa Fe crossed the double yellow line and entered into the path of a 2017 Hyundai Sonata, striking the vehicle head-on, according to FHP.
The driver of the Sonata, 49-year-old Laura L. Justice of Arcadia, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The driver of the Santa Fe, 47-year-old Marie J. Francoise Toulme of Tampa, was airlifted to the hospital in critical condition.
According to FHP, Toulme has been charged with improper passing.
