Man in critical condition after overnight wreck on I-75 near University Parkway

A Valrico man is in critical condition after a single-vehicle wreck on Interstate 75 early Sunday morning.

According to a release from the Florida Highway Patrol, the vehicle was heading southbound on I-75, approaching the University Parkway exit, when the driver lost control.

The vehicle was in the inside lane when it crossed the center and outside lanes onto the right shoulder while rotating counter clockwise, according to the release.

The front of the vehicle then collided with a tree west of I-75.

The driver, 33-year-old Robert Garrett Waldon, is hospitalized and in critical condition, according to FHP.

The accident was not related to the Diverging Diamond Interchange that opened later Sunday.
