Lakeland brush fire under control
A small brush that closed roadways in Lakeland is under control, fire officials reported Thursday morning.
According to Lakeland Fire Rescue, a fire broke out around 6 p.m. Wednesday in the area of Kathleen Road and George Jenkins Boulevard overpass, closing it for about four hours as heavy winds caused the fire to spread quickly and hop the overpass.

All eight of Lakeland’s fire units responded to the area, as well as Polk County Fire Rescue and the Florida Forest Service Lakeland District helped in extinguishing the flames.
Although Lakeland Fire Rescue expected the roadway to be closed through the night, George Jenkins Boulevard overpass reopened around 10:30 p.m.
No structures were damaged nor people injured.
Fire and smoke continued Thursday morning, but officials said not to be alarmed as the activity remained inside the fire line.
